TELL YOUR COUNCIL: IT’S TIME TO ACT ON CARSPREADING

Cars keep getting bigger. Our streets don’t.

Across the UK, oversized cars are taking up more of the limited space we all share. But carspreading isn’t just taking up space. It’s putting lives at risk – especially children’s – and making our streets harder and less safe for everyone to use. 

They make it difficult to see at crossings, force people off the pavement, squeeze cyclists, block wheelchairs and guide dogs and dominate our public spaces. 

The problem will keep getting worse until we do something. Let’s stop the biggest cars from taking over our streets.

THE PETITION

The cars on our streets are getting bigger, and SUV sales are at a record high. The bigger the cars, the bigger the risks for everyone else - particularly for kids. 

Children under 10 are three times more likely to die from a collision when hit by an SUV compared to a regular-sized car.  Plus this trend toward ever-bigger cars - known as carpsreading - could wipe out roughly 1 in 10 on-street parking spaces in cities across the UK by 2040. 

The government, mayors and local councils should act now by:

    1. Introducing fairer parking tariffs or taxation based on the size of cars

    2. Banning adverts of SUVs in publicly owned spaces

    3. Calling for a child visibility test as part of car safety testing.
